About
Welcome to Saskatoon’s new central library.
Scheduled to open in 2027, the new central library aims to improve the livability of Saskatoon by making possible a wide range of enhanced learning and entertainment options for residents of all ages.
Modern libraries serve as community hubs within cities and help address systemic social issues such as affordability, literacy, social isolation and exclusion. They provide spaces for people to meet, learn, share, and foster a sense of belonging. Moreover, libraries promote the development of digital, cultural and social literacies.
The central library will serve as the heart of our library system. It is designed to enhance library services to meet the needs of our community now and for future generations. The facility supports library operations, creates critical social infrastructure, and generates positive economic impact and stimulates economic revitalization.
The budget for the central library project is $134 million, with funding coming from multiple sources, including the library’s capital reserves, borrowing, donations and the sale of the existing property.
The building will cover 11,600 m² (124,860 sq ft) over four levels and will feature a large public green space in the heart of downtown Saskatoon.
Over sixty years after our current central library opened and introduced innovations in library services, we are poised to enter a new era of public library services in Saskatoon. Construction is currently underway, and we invite you to learn more about how we got here and where we’re going through the links below.
