Landscaping & Outdoor Plaza

The library building occupies 45% of the property, leaving room for a spacious green area to the south with a paved entry plaza and landscaping on the north.

The unique landscape around Saskatoon serves as inspiration for the site design. The wetlands and the knob-and-kettle topography, formed by the retreat of glaciers, inform the basic shapes and structures found throughout the site. These natural forms influence the design of seating structures, raised planters and other accents.

Large grassy areas contribute to downtown Saskatoon’s greenspace. The landscape includes a circular gathering area surrounded by raised seating, providing a space for events and allowing for the erection of a tipi. The exterior landscaping features plants and trees native to Saskatchewan, reflecting the surrounding environment.

Amenities for pedestrians and cyclists are available throughout the plaza and other hard surfaces, including bike racks, a bike repair station, a water fountain, benches and pathways connecting to and weaving through the landscape.
